A nurse consultant who set up a team to manage the emotional and physical side effects of cancer treatment has been nominated for a national award.

Diana Greenfield established the nurse-led Living With and Beyond Cancer team at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The team anticipates and monitors patients for medical or emotional late or long-term consequences of cancer treatment.

Professor Greenfield was nominated by her colleagues in the Innovation Excellence category at the Macmillan Professionals Excellence Awards. The prize is awarded to individuals who have shown forward thinking in developing a new product or service.

Professor Greenfield said: ‘The team is a testament to the success of modern cancer treatment, because more people are living with and beyond cancer than ever before.

‘But very often the consequences of having had cancer treatment are not always what people might think. People find it difficult to explain how they feel to those around them, and often don’t realise that the healing process can take weeks, months or even years.’

The awards will be presented at a ceremony at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole Hotel on Thursday 17 November.
