Picture: iStock What is monkeypox?Monkeypox is a rare disease related to smallpox that is caused by infection with the monkeypox virus .
The virus was first identified in monkeys in 1958, with the first human case in 1970 in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Since then, the infection has been reported in a number of central and western African countries, and can be spread by animals such as rodents including rats, mice and squirrels.
