Book explores aspects of belonging through Going to Church
An illustrated book to inform people with learning disabilities about attending church has been published
Going to Church is by award-winning publisher Books Beyond Words who produce informative publications with no text.
The book, which has been co-authored by Katie Carpenter, who has Down’s Syndrome, supports people to explore aspects of belonging to a church community, and to decide if they want to be part of it.
Reducing barriers
It shows what happens during a service, including singing hymns. It will also help a church community actively consider how to reduce the participation barriers that some members of society face.
Belonging to a community, the publisher says:
- Reduces isolation
- Gives people meaning and purpose
- Can equip people to contribute more fully
Ms Carpenter said she enjoyed working on the book, particularly taking part in a London meeting and working with the illustrator.
Being part of a church community has helped her make friends, she says.
‘Every church should have the book to help people like me,’ Ms Carpenter says. ‘It will help them to understand the church service and the story will make them happy.’
The book, also written by Sheila Hollins and John Swinton can be bought for £10.
