Revalidation can seem challenging for some nurses and managers, but with the support of their organisations they can engage confidently with the process. This article describes Bupa’s approach to creating an infrastructure that embeds revalidation in its services. This includes letting nurse leaders know so that they can help nurses through the process, and developing a pathway that supports nurses’ ongoing learning and development.
Many nurse managers regard the revalidation process and its repercussions as challenging. At Bupa, the word ‘revalidation’ has been accompanied by palpable anxiety among nurses, and many have turned to nurse managers for advice. In the authors’ experience, nurses sometimes panic first and reflect later, so addressing their concerns can help nurse managers support their teams.
While the revalidation process represents a change, it does not have to be a burden. Nurses have always been accountable for their practice and development, and revalidation gives these activities a more robust framework.
