Letter: My advice to new nursing students

Enjoy the journey, learn from every opportunity and never forget why you want to be a nurse…nursing is the best job in the world

As you begin your nursing course, you enter into a unique profession.

You can be a pioneer of nursing practice and innovation, whilst having the honour of holding someone's hand, in the most difficult of times.

Whatever your chosen field, there will challenges and pressures but with perseverance and dedication, you can succeed.

It is important to look after yourself and gain an effective work life balance. You are able to perform at your best in practice and academically,with good emotional and physical health and wellbeing.

The key to success will be organisation, hard work and time management. In difficult times, use your network of other students, university tutors, practice mentors, family and friends.

And equally, recognise and celebrate your progress and achievements.

It may feel like a lifetime away until you're a qualified nurse, but time will fly by.
