Nursing Standard podcast: men in nursing – addressing the gender gap

Nursing student Kyle Sands joins a nurse lecturer to discuss gender and their experience of the profession

What’s it like being a male nurse in a predominantly female profession?

Stereotypes, image and titles are covered in the latest episode of the Nursing Standard podcast, which covers gender in nursing.

University of Surrey mental health nurse lecturer Laurence Drew, and University of Worcester second year adult nursing student Kyle Sands, share their experiences with Nursing Standard senior nurse editor Richard Hatchett.

Both interviewees talk about how they were initially discouraged from pursuing a nursing career by comments about gender stereotypes but now actively encourage men to join the profession.

In March 2020, around 11% of registered nurses in the UK were men – a figure that has hardly changed in years.
