Taking up your first post as a newly qualified nurse (NQN) can be daunting – but does it need to be this way?

Can it instead be a positive rite of passage after three years of training?

The latest episode of the Nursing Standard podcast provides practical tips on how NQNs can successfully navigate this transition.

Former director of nursing Emily McWhirter, who is now a consultant adviser, joins Nursing Standard editor Flavia Munn to discuss ways to build self-esteem, confidence and leadership skills as a new nurse.

She also provides practical examples of ways to deal with anxiety during the working day, including a quick reset exercise taken from her time working for the Kent Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance Trust.

Dr McWhirter also explains the need for NQNs to test themselves while also making use of support from the team – and shares her wisdom on being a ‘good human, not a great hero’.
