Tributes have been paid to two ‘much loved’ NHS nurses who died in a traffic accident while on holiday in the United States.

Tatiana Brandão, 30, and Raquel Moreira, 28, who both worked at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust, were reportedly killed when their vehicle was in a collision with a bus near the Grand Canyon on 3 February.

The trust’s chief nursing officer Gail Byrne said in a statement that Ms Brandão and Ms Moreira were passionate about nursing and well-known among colleagues and patients for their ‘kindness, empathy and enthusiasm’.

‘The entire nursing family at University Hospital Southampton has been left shocked and saddened by their tragic deaths,’ she said.

The two nurses were respected and valued members of trust’s neurology and stroke teams

Ms Brandão joined the trust’s neurology department seven years ago and Ms Moreira had worked in the stroke team for the past five years.

Both were ‘highly respected and highly valued’ members of their teams and had moved from Portugal to join the trust with bright careers ahead of them, said Ms Byrne.

‘The friends were well-known for their kindness, empathy and enthusiasm. Both were passionate about nursing and providing the very best care for our patients. Outside of work they shared a love for new experiences, adventure and living life to the fullest,’ Ms Byrne said.

‘I know I speak on behalf of the entire UHS workforce in saying they will be sorely missed. We send our love and condolences to their families at this very sad time.’
