From TV nurse to ED nurse: my real-life role swap
Emergency department has all the excitement of former career, says Casualty actor
An actor has traded playing a nurse in television shows for a real-life role in an emergency department (ED).
Vicky Hall decided to become a nurse after the birth of her two children.
Played a nurse in film and television shows
She has worked part-time in the ED at Alexandra Hospital in Redditch, part of Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust since 2017, having previously acted as a nurse in television shows including Line of Duty, Coronation Street and Doctors, as well as hospital-based TV series Casualty, Holby City and Bodies.
She also played an ED nurse in the latest Ken Loach film, Sorry We Missed You, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May.
‘Emergency nursing fit the bill’
After the birth of her children, Ms Hall decided she did not want to work around the country for long periods of time. ‘I thought about what I would do next and decided it had to have all the excitement of acting, the need to really use my brain, and that I would be in demand. Emergency nursing just fit the bill.’
Ms Hall said she enjoys the pace of working in an ED.
‘The Alexandra is a really busy and interesting hospital, but small enough that you get to know people easily,’ she said. ‘I love our ED, I am challenged every day.’
