Neuro and amputee rehabilitation nurse Mr Shum, who was also a British Red Cross volunteer and an emergency first aid motorcycle responder, died on Sunday.

Deep sadness

RCN London director Bernell Bussue said he was a committed and active member.

A statement on the RCN London Facebook page read: 'It was with deep sadness that we learned at the weekend of the death of Andy Shum, RCN representative and chair of our Inner south west London Branch.

'Andy died on Sunday following a two-week battle in hospital. He celebrated his 47th birthday in hospital last Tuesday where the staff provided a birthday cake.

'Andy was a committed and active member who had done a huge amount to help organise the RCN locally in south west London, and previously had been active in south east London. Andy was a regular attendee at congress where he spoke passionately from the platform about nursing issues affecting his fellow members.'

'A good heart'

Inner south west London branch learning and development officer Pat Yiggon wrote on the RCN London Facebook page: ‘We are honoured and blessed to have known Andy.

‘A good heart has stopped beating a good soul ascended to heaven.'

Mr Shum was a regular at RCN congress, speaking during the first resolution item of 2015’s event to oppose the use of covert recording devices in nursing and care homes.
