The students met the Duchess of Cornwall when she received an honorary doctorate of letters from the University of Chester for ‘for her inspirational leadership in promoting and encouraging literacy initiatives and celebrating literature’.

The Duchess, who also has the title of the Countess of Chester, attended the university’s graduation ceremony in Chester cathedral this week and was introduced to health, policing and teaching students.

Genuine interest

Rebecca Devitt, who is studying for a bachelor of nursing in adult nursing, and David Williamson, a nursing associate student, met the Duchess.

Mr Williamson said: ‘She seemed interested in meeting us. She spoke to us all individually and asked us what courses we were doing and how far into our studies we are.’

Robyn Comerford, who is studying for a bachelor of science in midwifery, added: ‘She told me one of her favourite programmes is Call the Midwife. She was genuinely interested in what we had to say.’

University vice-chancellor Tim Wheeler said: ‘We were pleased to see the Countess talk to our students about their courses and their future plans.’
