The RCN ambassador, who was a special guest at the RCNi Nurse Awards 2018, shares the accolade with luminaries including Killing Eve actor Sandra Oh, singer Taylor Swift and the New Zealand prime minister Jacinda Ardern.

'Mickle might'

An accompanying profile for Time magazine written by actor Dame Emma Thompson described Ms Clarke as possessing 'the courage of a small lion, the stamina of a Welsh pit pony and the soul of a clown'.

'[She is] a woman of mickle might, whose instincts, whetted by years of hard work in environments that were not always safe or healthy, are as finely honed as any I’ve encountered,' wrote Dame Emma.

'A powerhouse to watch and an ally to die for.'

Ms Clarke recently spoke publicly for the first time about her experience of surviving two brain haemorrhages, as she launched the SameYou charity for young adults who have experienced brain injury and stroke.

The RCN is one of the partners for the charity, which will provide grants and advocate for health leaders to improve neurorehabilitation for young adults after brain injury and stroke.

Ms Clarke has used her star status to help raise money and awareness for the nursing profession, last year telling nurses at the RCNi Nurse Awards that she was inspired by the care her father had received before his death.

'Fiercely proud' of RCN role

When she became RCN ambassador in April 2018, she said: 'I am fiercely proud of my new role as ambassador and vow to use it to champion nurses and their work.

'Together, we must attract young people into the profession, support them to innovate and become the powerful nurses of tomorrow.'
