Fundraising nurse gets garden makeover from Alan Titchmarsh

A retired paediatric nurse who has raised more than a million pounds for sick children has had her back yard transformed by TV gardener Alan Titchmarsh as reward for her hard work.

Rosie Mitchell has raised £1.7 million for the paediatric intensive care unit at Southampton General Hospital, where she began working in 2001.

In 2005 she set up Friends of PICU, a charity which has paid for life-saving equipment, and is currently raising money for two extra beds at the unit.

She featured in the July 26 episode of ITV makeover show Love Your Garden, where Alan Titchmarsh and his team turned a patch of uneven lawn into a cruise-ship inspired pleasure garden complete with a patio shaped like the prow of a boat.

The garden also features messages from families Ms Mitchell has helped.

She told the programme that nursing was a vocation for her, and her own experiences meant she knew what families were going through.

‘Having lost a child myself, I can emphasise with parents who are losing a child,’ she said.
