Protecting the title ‘nurse’, ethical overseas recruitment and assisted dying are among the topics to be debated at this year’s RCN congress.

Other items on the congress agenda include issues around nurses’ health and well-being, such as the impact of overworking, compassion fatigue and long-COVID.

The event will take place from 5-9 June at the Scottish Event Campus in Glasgow and is free for RCN members to attend.

Nurse leadership and safe staffing to be discussed at RCN congress

Congress is returning to an in-person event this year, after the face-to-face element of congress 2021 was cancelled amid allegations of sexual harassment in the organisation. The college’s governing body also took the unprecedented step of removing debates from last year’s programme after members raised concerns about the ability to participate online.

Also on the agenda this year are nurse leadership, safe staffing and calls for RCN council to lobby for the protection of supernumerary status for nursing students.

Event aims to ‘bring about meaningful change’ to nursing

RCN congress chair BJ Waltho said: ‘We know that nursing is not an easy job, exacerbated by the challenges of the pandemic, and I want congress 2022 to give people the energy and enthusiasm to continue their fantastic work.

‘I want members to know that we’re listening and that they can bring about meaningful change through their input at the conference.’

How do congress debates work?

There are two types of debate:

1. Resolution: Where members vote on a motion; a majority vote directs the future work of the RCN. Each RCN branch and forum is allocated a number of votes according to its size to ensure the whole college membership is represented in the vote.

2. Matter for discussion: Members debate a motion and share views, but there is no vote.

Emergency agenda items are debate items that can be submitted at any point up to and during congress, and reflect the most pressing professional or political issues as they happen.
