COVID-19: nurse applauded by colleagues as he leaves intensive care unit

Felix Khor salutes ‘incredible care’ of staff after 45 days in ICU

Staff clap as Felix Khor leaves the ICU at Southend University Hospital

A nurse who contracted COVID-19 has been applauded by colleagues after coming off a ventilator following 45 days in intensive care.

Felix Khor was congratulated as he was wheeled to a COVID-19 ward at Southend University Hospital, Essex, where he has worked for 15 years.

Mr Khor joined the hospital’s resuscitation training team in 2005, and, following his retirement, continued to work as part of the emergency department’s staff bank.

Nurse grateful for ‘huge love and support from colleagues’

Speaking from his hospital bed, Mr Khor thanked his colleagues for their care.

‘I’m incredibly grateful to all of the hospital staff who have helped keep me fighting, and for the huge love and support from colleagues and friends,’ he said.

‘I have seen the incredible care that they give to patients.’

Southend University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust director of nursing Denise Townsend said: ‘It's wonderful to be able to celebrate Felix's slow road to recovery with fellow members of staff from across the trust.

‘His recovery is a real message of hope and optimism, not just for staff working with COVID-19 patients, but for all of us.’
