Band 7, 8 and 9 nursing jobs review: more time to have your say

The NHS Staff Council has extended the consultation period on its review of job profiles for senior nursing roles until mid-January, to allow more time to compile feedback from staff and employers. The review follows a campaign by the RCN and Royal College of Midwives to ensure job profiles more accurately reflect roles and staff are paid fairly. Many nurses feel their pay does not reflect their skills and responsibilities, leading to dissatisfaction and potential staff shortages.

Nurses will have more time to have their say on a review into NHS nursing job profiles for bands 7, 8 and 9, after a consultation on it was extended.

The NHS Staff Council job evaluation group (JEG) began a nine-week consultation on 14 October last year on proposed changes to job evaluation profiles for the three nursing and midwifery bands.

Nursing job profiles have not been updated for more than a decade

The consultation was due to end on 15 December, but has been extended to 12 January. NHS Employers said this is to allow more time ‘for local discussions to continue and comprehensive feedback to be compiled’.

The profile review follows a long-running campaign by the RCN and the Royal College of Midwives, which submitted a request to the staff council for profiles to be updated.

‘The RCN has fought hard for this review in order to ensure nursing staff at all levels are paid fairly for the work they do’

Brian Morton, RCN associate director of employment relations

Job profiles have not been updated for more than a decade, and it is hoped the revised ones will more accurately represent the reality of present-day nursing skills, training and practice

Eight in ten nurses say pay level doesn’t match their skill, expertise and responsibilities

RCN associate director of employment relations Brian Morton said: ‘The RCN has fought hard for this review in order to ensure nursing staff at all levels are paid fairly for the work they do.

‘The tragic reality is that eight in ten say their level of pay doesn’t match their skill, expertise and responsibilities. This leaves nursing staff feeling undervalued, pushing many into leaving the profession.

‘We have been consulting our members and their elected representatives, and will continue to contribute to this review to ensure the voice of nursing is at the heart of its findings.’

Feedback from bands 4, 5 and 6 nurses to be published early in 2025

Nursing staff and employers are invited to take part in the consultation, and have until 7pm on 12 January to have their say.

While this consultation is ongoing, the JEG will be reviewing the feedback received during a separate consultation on bands 4, 5 and 6, the results of which are expected to be published in early 2025.
