‘Shocking’ hospital learning disability nurse gaps exposed

One in three NHS trusts in England (29%) do not have a specific acute learning disability liaison service with a learning disability registered nurse for the estimated 1.5 million people with learning disabilities in England. RCN learning disability nursing forum professional lead Jonathan Beebee says many NHS trusts' lack of a specific liaison service with a learning disability nurse is 'shocking' and they are missing out on syndrome-specific knowledge and specialist communication skills.
For many of the estimated 1.5 million people with learning disabilities in England, there will not be a clinician with specialist skills on hand to help meet their healthcare and communication needs
