Nurse shortages: is learning disability the most at-risk field?

As the NHS nursing staff crisis continues, numbers in learning disability (LD) nursing have plummeted, with a 44% drop in LD nurses in the NHS in England between September 2009 and January 2024. We look at changes in university places offered and applications for the field, as well as numbers on the Nursing and Midwifery Council register – and how this compares to adult nurse numbers.
