Nursing Live: Michael Rosen will ‘express my gratitude’ to nurses at event
The poet and broadcaster will discuss his near-fatal COVID-19 experience and the care he received; the two-day festival also offers a wealth of speakers, support sessions and entertainment
Michael Rosen, one of the country's best-loved authors, poets and broadcasters, has been revealed as a keynote speaker at the inaugural Nursing Live event in Liverpool this November.
The former children's laureate and ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt’ author is a proud champion of nurses, which was vividly reinforced when he was hospitalised with COVID-19 for three months at the start of the pandemic in 2020.

Author ‘can’t think of a sector more deserving of an event’
Mr Rosen will be sharing his account of the near-fatal experience – which saw him in a coma in an intensive care unit for 40 days – when he addresses the audience at Nursing Live, an innovative celebration of nurses and nursing, on 10 November.
‘I’ve written newspaper articles, poems and whole books about my deep admiration for the nursing profession,’ said Mr Rosen, ‘and speaking at Nursing Live will give me another opportunity to express my gratitude to thousands of nurses, face to face.
‘I also can’t think of a sector more deserving of an event with a focus on personal well-being, not to mention getting a chance to step away from the pressures of work and having some fun.’
Following his recovery, Mr Rosen published ‘Many Different Kinds of Love: A Story of Life, Death and the NHS’, a deeply personal and moving memoir of his recovery that paid tribute to the nurses who cared for him.
It was also revealed this week that Mr Rosen has won the 2023 PEN Pinter prize. Judges said he ‘has a rare, invaluable gift: the ability to address the most serious matters of life in a spirit of joy, humour and hope’, and was ‘fearless in holding power to account’.
Nursing Live includes sessions on mental health and self-care
Nursing Live takes place on 10-11 November and Mr Rosen will be joined by an impressive line-up of nursing experts, policymakers and influencers already confirmed for the first-of-its-kind event, including chief nursing officer for England Dame Ruth May.
There will also be more than 100 talks, masterclasses and demonstrations on offer, as well as dedicated sessions on mental and physical health, peer-to-peer support, asking for help, and prioritising personal self-care.

Visitors to Nursing Live will have the opportunity to accrue CPD hours, with presentations focused on up-skilling, diversity and inclusion, safeguarding, leadership, technology and much more.
