Recruitment campaign gets staff talking about the things that motivate them

Staff at the Queen Victoria Hospital NHS Foundation Trust have been sharing stories

Nurses have been talking about what motives them as part of a recruitment campaign by a specialist hospital trust in East Sussex.

The 'What drives you?' campaign at Queen Victoria Hospital NHS Foundation Trust in (QVH) in East Grinstead asks staff to share stories about why they joined the profession.

Director of nursing and quality Jo Thomas said: 'Workforce is the single biggest challenge in the NHS nationally at the moment.

'While Queen Victoria Hospital has a reputation as a specialist NHS hospital providing life-changing reconstructive surgery, burns care and rehabilitation services, it's important we come up with new ways of attracting the best nurses.

'Through the voices of our staff our campaign gives an insight into what it's really like to work at our hospital.'

Head of communications Clare Pirie said: 'It’s a challenging time for recruitment in the NHS, we know that nurses are bombarded with messages from every direction on different benefits, training or specialisms. So this time, we decided to do things a little differently, and let our staff do the talking.'

The initiative comes amid national efforts to promote nursing careers. In March, England's chief nurse Jane Cummings announced a nursing recruitment and retention campaign to address high vacancy rates. NHS Improvement figures suggest full-time equivalent nurse vacancies stood at 35,835 in December 2017.
