Menopause stigma at work: why nurses feel they need to quit

The nurse workforce has a significant proportion of women in the typical perimenopause and menopause age range. While NHS employers are improving the support they offer women who experience debilitating and often distressing symptoms, some nurses feel they have no choice but to quit their job. Continuing stigma about menopause means some colleagues and managers fail to understand the full impact of menopause symptoms on a nurse’s working life. And overwhelming anxiety compounded by poor sleep can make nurses fearful of making mistakes in clinical practice. Nurses with their own experience of managing menopause at work, explain how they are supporting others to do the same.
