RCN award winner demonstrates compassionate leadership in action
Julie Roye’s drive and commitment to break down health inequalities and improve access to care improved uptake of smear tests among a diverse patient group
I like to take time to reflect on the commitment and inspiration of nurses and nursing leaders who have been a central part of responding to people in need, and often amid challenging situations.
Well done to all the nurses who were nominated for the Leadership category of the RCN Nursing Awards. As a judge this year, I was moved and inspired by the entries; nursing is in safe and strong hands.
I was delighted to learn that Julie Roye, who won the Leadership category, was named RCN Nurse of the Year 2023.
Committed to improving cervical cancer screening uptake in a deprived area
Ms Roye and her team are an example of compassionate leadership in action. Working together they are committed to improving cervical cancer screening uptake in their trust in a deprived area of London.
Recognising the beauty of diversity that existed in the local community, and that one type of screening service does not suit all, Ms Roye and her colleagues set out to learn from those they serve.

She worked alongside people from her local community and with other outreach services to improve uptake rates of cervical screening from this diverse community, including non-English speakers, people living in deprived situations, people who have experienced the trauma of sexual abuse, and people with learning disabilities.
Working with local people to create a more person-centred approach to cervical screening
Ms Roye and her team harnessed the expertise and lived experience of people in the local community, and with their leadership and commitment, were able to encourage more people to access a more compassionate and person-centred approach to cervical screening.
Ms Roye and her colleagues are but one example of the often-hidden work that nurses and nursing leaders do, thank you.
