Pensions can be a daunting topic, especially when it comes to the inner workings of the generous but complicated NHS scheme.

The latest episode of the Nursing Standard podcast takes a back-to-basics approach, explaining why pensions are so important – and why the NHS pension in particular offers such good value.

Think twice before cutting pension

With the cost of living remaining stubbornly high, some nurses are viewing pension contributions as an unnecessary expense that can be cut.

But our guest Graham Crossley from financial advisers Quilter explains why nurses should remain in the scheme if they possibly can – and points towards some sources of help for those who are struggling financially.

Unpicking the jargon around pensions

Mr Crossley, a self-described ‘NHS pension geek’, also talks to podcast host and RCNi features editor Alistair Mason about the difference between a defined-contribution and a defined-benefit pension, and the extra financial security that NHS workers can receive.

He also explains some recent changes to the NHS pension scheme and how these might affect nurses.
