NMC appoints Andrea Sutcliffe as new chief executive
CQC’s chief inspector of adult social care named as Jackie Smith’s successor
The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) has appointed a new chief executive.
Andrea Sutcliffe will take up the post in January, replacing interim chief executive and registrar Sue Killen, who took the reins following the resignation of Jackie Smith earlier this year.
‘A wealth of experience in health and social care’
Ms Sutcliffe joins from the Care Quality Commission (CQC), where she has been chief inspector of adult social care since 2013, says she is delighted to join the nursing regulator and will put ‘people at the heart of everything we do’.
NMC chair Philip Graf says: ‘Andrea brings with her a wealth of experience in health and social care.
‘Throughout her career she has demonstrated a real commitment to putting the safety of those receiving care at the heart of her work and I know that she will ensure the voice of patients, nurses, midwives and nursing associates are at the core of what we do.
‘I am sure that Andrea will provide strong leadership to the organisation as we embark on developing our ambitious new strategy for 2020-25.’
Raised concerns about social care provision
Ms Sutcliffe was previously chief executive at the Social Care Institute for Excellence, and an executive director at the then National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence.
She was awarded a CBE for services to adult social care in this year’s new year’s honours list, and last year made headlines for raising concerns about social care provision during the National Children and Adult Services Conference.

Ms Smith’s resignation in May after six years at the helm of the NMC came days before a report into the regulator’s handling of the Morecambe Bay scandal.
She said then that it was time for someone else to take over and she had only intended to stay in the role for five years.
