Sideways move in nursing: when it’s right for your career

Sideways or lateral career moves in nursing can enhance your long-term chances of promotion by widening your knowledge and competence. Gaining insight in a service area where you aspire to practise may require a sideways move in the short-term, but will make you a stronger candidate for promotion later. Moving roles or organisations while remaining on the same band may also offer work-life balance, or simply a welcome change. Nurse and article author Charlotte Collings describes her own experience of sideways job moves that have resulted in a fulfilling career in an area of nursing about which she feels passionate. She offers advice on how to decide whether a sideways move will be good for you and your career
