Arrest made after nurse dies from stab wounds
A nurse has died while working at a mental health hospital in south London.
Police were called just before 3pm yesterday (Thursday 12) with reports of an attack at Southleigh Community Hospital, in South Croydon.
On arrival they found a man in his 60s with stab wounds which he later died from.
A 40-year-old man was arrested at the scene and taken to a south London hospital for treatment for an injury to his hand.
A spokesperson for Inmind, the private mental healthcare provider which runs the hospital, confirmed the victim was one of its nurses and added: ‘Our deepest sympathies are with his family, friends and colleagues. He was a valued and respected member of staff who will be deeply missed. We cannot say more as we are working closely with the police on their ongoing investigation into this incident.’
The nurse's next of kin have been informed and a post-mortem examination will take place.
Detectives from the Metropolitan Police's Homicide and Major Crime Command are investigating the stabbing.
The hospital has been rated ‘good’ in the Care Quality Commission’s latest report, published today (Friday 13), after an inspection in August last year.
