Mr Duggan will take up his new post at the network, which represents NHS-funded mental health and learning disability service providers in England, in late November.

He is currently chief executive at the Centre for Mental Health, one of the UK’s leading authorities on mental health research.

Prior to joining the centre in 2006, he worked for the Department of Health leading on mental health in the criminal justice system.

President’s medal

Mr Duggan trained as a mental Heath nurse in Sussex, where he also became director of nursing for an NHS Trust. In 2013, he was awarded the president's medal by the Royal College of Psychiatrists.

He said of his new role: 'I am absolutely delighted to take up the position of chief executive of the Mental Health Network.

'It is an important organisation that does a fantastic job ensuring that the views of mental health leaders are represented at the highest levels. I am proud to have the opportunity to lead the network at a time of great challenges and opportunities for the mental health sector.'
