NHS nurses are entitled to request flexible working from day one of employment, but in many instances it is denied, and sometimes with little consideration given. Nursing staff report that it can be particularly difficult to make flexible working arrangements once you move up from a band 5 position. Flexible working takes many forms, from hybrid roles to condensed hours, set hours and working from home – and more can be done by managers to consult with individual team members and try to find solutions, staff say. We look at how nurses can negotiate with their manager or employer, and when to seek support or legal advice if flexible working is denied.
