Hip fracture is the most common serious injury in older people and those living with frailty presenting to an emergency department (ED), says the Royal College of Emergency Medicine (RCEM) .

The annual cost excluding social care is around £1 billion, says the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), in its guidance on the management of hip fractures , which was updated in January 2023.
