Flexible new nursing degree will support work-life balance

A part-time nursing degree specifically for parents or carers to ‘fulfil their dreams of becoming a nurse’ is being launched for the first time.
Swansea University is thought to be the first in the UK to launch the new flexible degree, which is designed to help future nurses coordinate their course and clinical placements around their responsibilities at home.
The four-year BSc course in adult nursing, starting in April, features a shorter study week, hybrid learning between online and on-campus lectures, increased annual leave and flexibility to coordinate placements around personal commitments and school holidays in partnership with NHS Wales. Its fees are fully funded through an NHS bursary.
A spokesperson for Swansea University said: ‘The new course is being launched to address NHS shortages and encourage people with life experience to join the nursing profession by opening the door to those who may otherwise not be able to commit to studying.
‘The university recognises the strengths of those who are multi-tasking on a day-to-day basis and the need to provide a more flexible approach to study.’

Social care professor Jayne Cutter, who is head of the university’s school of health, said: ‘I can’t wait to welcome our first students on this exciting new programme, which will offer people who may not otherwise have the opportunity the chance to study for a degree in nursing.
‘I have been a registered nurse for many years and can honestly say that it has been a privilege to be a member of this most rewarding profession.
‘This programme will allow those who can’t study full-time to fulfil their dreams and start working towards a career in which they will make a immense difference to those in their care and from which they will achieve huge satisfaction.’
