Key topics in surgical research and methodology

If the editors’ intention was to produce a comprehensive text book that will be of value to healthcare professionals interested in surgical research and improvements in health care, they have succeeded.

Some 110 contributors from around the world have been brought together to offer their considerable knowledge to the reader on key topics in surgical research and methodology.

Modern health care is not just about treating the sick, but ensuring that the health care delivered is the best available. One of the great drawbacks in health research is that dissemination of results does not always take place, for a number of reasons. This book attempts to change this situation.

It is not intended to be seen as some sort of ‘guide book’ where the reader follows the instructions and produces a piece of research for publication.

It should be seen as a valuable resource for its targeted audience of professionals interested in or responsible for carrying out research in the clinical environment. The topics covered include the usual areas such as study design, and recruitment of patients to safety and ethical issues. But this book also covers other important topics such as the use of animals in research, applying for funding, presentations and fraud.

However despite its highly technical approach, its use of language makes it easy to follow. More importantly, several chapters in the book such as how to read a paper, data development and the literature search in surgical research would be of invaluable help to novice healthcare professionals interested in research.

Each chapter is laid out in a similar fashion and there is an abstract and a content list to help the reader find the appropriate entry. The latter part of the book is given over to an overview of current trends and recent innovations in the surgical field.

The book is well presented and runs to some 1,000 pages, its price of £180 for the hardback might be a little expensive for individuals to purchase unless they carry out a lot of research as part of their role, but I think this book would make a great addition to any hospital or university library.
