How to Write a Paper

I WAS delighted when this slim, handbag-sized, lightweight paperback reference book, with easy reading font, arrived on my desk with a request for review.

I have owned an earlier edition for many years and had recently lent it out, always a mistake. One of the most useful books I have owned, even if just to inspire one to write more for publication.

This format of book suits all those working in research, but also those with anything to say in letter format, reviewer or editorial role, simplifying the publishing world for all disciplines. It is a useful book for those at an early stage of their writing and presenting career through to the expert who needs a few more tips. The 5th edition now includes a useful and interesting chapter on open access publication, which is an on-going and challenging discussion, managed well by its author.

Although the price may seem a little steep, it is one of those publications that you will own for your career and find invaluable, just don’t lend it

Although the price may seem a little steep, it is one of those publications that you will own for your career and find invaluable, just don’t lend it out. It has been well edited into a smooth and consequential flow of chapters, clearly displayed and not too long to allow for easy navigation. It is easy to read with a decent font size and layout. Its strength is its clear format, although I do wonder if a chapter on the use of social media in publishing would be a useful addition in future editions.

The summary tables in each chapter offer the rushed reader some help with the finer points in a clear and concise format.

I would certainly recommend this book to you if you are struggling with, or in need of, developing your publishing skills.
