NEWS2 for nurses: how to use the patient deterioration tool

The NEWS2 tool helps nurses and other registered healthcare professionals to recognise that an adult patient’s condition is deteriorating, and supports clinical decision-making. The updated National Early Warning Score works by scoring physiological parameters routinely measured in nursing observations – respiration rate, oxygen saturation, systolic blood pressure, pulse rate, level of consciousness or new confusion, and temperature. The higher the aggregate score, the further the parameters are from normal range. This helps identify the patient’s clinical risk and how the healthcare team should respond. NEWS2 should be used to inform a nurse’s clinical judgement, not as a substitute for it.
