The awards covers a wide range of specialties such as learning disability nursing, child health, cancer nursing, mental health and nursing older people. There is also a general category “Innovations in your Specialty Award” for other areas of nursing not covered by the specialist categories plus a category for student nurses and one for individuals working in a healthcare support role.

Short listing and judging

For each category, five finalists will be shortlisted by a panel of judges including the editors of RCNi’s eleven journals and nurses in clinical practice with expertise in the given area. Entrants will be notified of the outcome of their entry in February 2018. Short listed entrants except those nominated for the Patients Choice Award will be invited to present their initiative to a panel of judges in London in March 2018. The panel will decided the winner for each category. Category winners will then be considered by the judges for the overall award, the “RCN Nurse of the Year 2018”.

The finalists for the Patients Choice Award will be decided by Graham Scott, Editorial Director, RCNi and Katherine Murphy, Chief Executive of the Patients Association. The winner of this special award will be decided by a public vote. Voting will open on in March 2018 and close towards the end of April 2018. Further details on how to vote will be made available nearer the time.
