Blood cancer charity launches special patient information packs

A blood cancer charity is encouraging cancer nurses to distribute its new personalised information packs to their patients.

Bloodwise produced the folders so patients can collate and store all their illness-specific information in one easy-to-access place.

It provides space to write down the contact details for their dedicated clinical nurse specialist (CNS) alongside a diary for recording thoughts and feelings.

The initiative was in response to a survey by the charity of 1,725 people personally affected by cancer, which showed 9 out of 10 want information at diagnosis about their specific condition, given there are 137 different types of blood cancer.

Individualised information 

The launch of the packs coincides with World Cancer Day on 4 February.

London’s Hammersmith Hospital acute leukaemia nurse Gill Brisley said: ‘There is a lot of information to take in, particularly at diagnosis, and this can often be overwhelming for patients and relatives.

‘It has been helpful to give my patients a comprehensive, individualised information pack that they can read in their own time.

‘The folder allows all the information to be kept in one place and looks far more professional, and there is a purpose-made slot for a CNS contact card too, which has proved useful.’
