Devising the schedule of nursing time on a hospital ward can be a time-consuming business which, if not done properly, can affect staff morale, resource utilisation and patient care. Over the past decade, new methods of rostering have been introduced across the UK. This article describes efforts to implement a system of self-rostering in a small cancer ward in an effort to improve nursing productivity and the quality of patient care.
