Cancer treatments can cause symptoms that persist for months after completion of therapy. Anterior resection of the rectum is a surgical treatment for rectal cancer that may result in chronic problems. This is an area that has been neglected within the nursing arena. This article critically reviews the literature and discusses the social issues that individuals face when trying to adapt to this chronic, stigmatising condition.
