Assessment and Care Planning in Mental Health Nursing

This book offers an informative resource for new students in the field of mental health nursing practice.

This book offers an informative resource for new students in the field of mental health nursing practice.

There is a good introduction to the care planning process in section one, with a heavy emphasis on assessment, exploring communication skills and engaging the service user, noting how assessment guides the nursing process as a whole.

In section two, the author delves deeper into planning in mental health care, and looks at various aspects, including the physical and behavioural, as well as the role of thoughts and feelings.

Some practical and informative case studies are presented in section three, accompanied by sample care plans.

Although the stages of the nursing process in care planning are mentioned, Assessment and Care Planning in Mental Health Nursing does not focus on mental health nursing practice or the theory that should inform the care planning process.

The book also lacks critical analysis of mental health nursing practice and professional development.

This book would be useful to first and possibly second-year pre-registration nursing students who want to progress their knowledge of care planning skills.

It could also be helpful for other healthcare staff involved in mental health care who want to improve their care planning skills.
