Eating disorders are mental health conditions characterised by dysfunctional eating habits, and include anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and binge-eating disorder.

Eating disorders are associated with significantly high mortality rates, with anorexia nervosa having the highest mortality of any mental health condition.

Research shows that early recognition and intervention is vital to making a full recovery from an eating disorder, yet teaching about eating disorders is not mandatory in mental health nursing degree programmes.
