Are you considering a career as a lung cancer nurse but don’t know where to start?

A new professional development guide has been created to encourage more nurses to choose the specialism.

Lung cancer nurses say help is needed due to pandemic pressures

The guide, produced by Lung Cancer Nursing UK (LCNUK), was developed in response to growing pressures in the profession.

A recent survey of LCNUK members found support was increasingly needed in the specialism due to mounting workloads and colleagues being redeployed during the COVID-19 pandemic.

‘A varied, valuable and rewarding career’

Chair of LCNUK and nurse clinician in lung cancer Jackie Fenemore said the professional development guide was ‘written by nurses, for nurses’.

‘Being a lung cancer nurse specialist (LCNS) is a varied, valuable and rewarding career,’ she added.

‘But we know we need more LCNSs to be able to fully meet the changing needs of growing numbers of patients.

‘It’s a dynamic career, with huge opportunities to develop as nursing professionals and to make a real difference in the lives of thousands of patients with lung cancer.’

Guide will help lung cancer nurse specialists to further their careers

The professional development guide lists core competencies and capabilities a clinical nurse specialist will require when making the move to become an LCNS. It also sets out how to support current LCNSs to further develop their skills in the role.

Macmillan lung cancer lead nurse and LCNUK committee member Karen Clayton said: ‘We hope the guide will help existing LCNSs in considering their priorities for professional development, supporting conversations with managers about training needs and career goals, and in job-matching and making a case for promotion.’
