Patient’s Choice Award finalist: Anna Bedrich

Patient’s Choice Award finalist: Anna Bedrich

Senior staff nurse, Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust

Mum Elina Nupponen nominated her daughter Freya’s ‘great’ psychiatric intensive care unit nurse for her ‘outstanding and compassionate care’. Freya has extremely rare cerebrocostomandibular syndrome, which causes tissue abnormalities and bone formation. At six months old, Freya spent one month in St Mary’s Hospital, London, fighting for her life. Elina says: ‘Anna’s efforts were endless. Besides her faultless clinical skills, she tried to arrange opportunities for us to do normal baby things.’ Anna spent hours helping to find and make a safe wheelchair buggy so that Freya’s parents could take her for walks. ‘We don’t know how long we will have with Freya,’ Elina adds. ‘Anna helped us relax during the most stressful time in our lives and is part of some happy, precious memories we have been able to make with our daughter.’
