Nursing Older People Award finalist: Alcohol Liaison Service

Spectrum Community Health CIC

This team provides a lifeline for vulnerable older people who lack awareness of their alcohol issues or do not engage with recovery services. A significant proportion of the services patients are over 65 (16%), and may have a complex range of additional vulnerabilities, including mental illness, social isolation or disability. Targeted through screening at Pinderfields Hospital in Wakefield, this hard-to-reach group is offered a tailored package of care and pathways, including brief interventions, daily clinics, community detoxification and signposting. In one year from April 2015, the Alcohol Liaison Service team facilitated 39 early discharges and saved more than 210 bed days at 600 a day.
