Innovations in your Specialty Award finalist: Hospital Alcohol Liaison Service

Tameside Hospital NHS Foundation Trust

This nurse-led alcohol service has an 84% detoxification success rate and is saving hundreds of thousands of pounds. All patients aged over ten who attend A&E are screened for alcohol harm and, so far, 2,800 patients have received specialist intervention. The service includes a seven-day nurse response and ambulatory detox clinic. A nurse-led fibroscan clinic detects liver harm earlier and the teams acute alcohol withdrawal prescribing protocol has been endorsed by NICE as an exemplar. There are rolling training programmes for all trust staff and other key care providers, and alcohol champions are in every clinical area as ambassadors for best practice.
