Mentoring and the 6Cs

As a staff nurse in a rehabilitation unit, I have been involved in patient care initiatives using the 6Cs of nursing: care, compassion, competence, communication, courage and commitment. However, I had not appreciated the benefits of using the 6Cs of nursing in the mentorship role.

Patient safety

Recently my colleagues and I developed our understanding of the 6Cs of nursing – care, compassion, competence, communication, courage and commitment. As a result, I became interested in the wider organisational effect on care, both at ward and trust level.

Effective mentorship

This article reminded me that it is important for mentors not to undermine students’ confidence while continuing to challenge them in preparation for qualification and further managerial responsibilities.
