Empire Windrush anniversary

Nurses and other health workers gathered at London‘s St Thomas’ Hospital to celebrate the arrival of the Empire Windush in Southampton in 1948. Surviving passenger Sam King recalled how the ship’s arrival opened the door to the UK for many people including the first cohort of West Indian nurses responding to a call to work in the post-war NHS.
