Malnutrition

A CPD article enhanced Alba Andújar’s understanding of how to meet the nutritional needs of older patients

A CPD article enhanced Alba Andújar’s understanding of how to meet the nutritional needs of older patients.

Abstract

The CPD article discusses the tools and strategies that can be used to improve nutrition in older people admitted to acute care.

After reading the article, I am now more aware of the obstacles to adequate nutrition and hydration that many older people encounter. For example, I had previously not realised the importance of good oral hygiene and regular mouth care in ensuring adequate oral nutritional intake.

Older people admitted to hospital require care by a multidisciplinary team, as their basic care needs are usually greater than those of young people. These needs may include assistance with nutrition and hydration, elimination and personal hygiene activities.
