Compassionate care

A CPD article enhanced Elly Verwoerd’s awareness of the importance of compassion in good nursing care.

Abstract

After reading the CPD article, it is clear that compassionate care is fundamental to the nursing role. It engages nurses and service users and improves health outcomes physically and emotionally. The importance of compassionate care is emphasised on almost a daily basis during pre-registration nursing lectures.

As a nursing student I have the time to engage in conversations with patients, learning about their needs and wishes and building rapport. These patients then often feel more comfortable with me, discussing their concerns and asking questions that they may have considered silly otherwise. I have not previously thought about the importance of this time with patients but, on reflection, this is integral to compassionate care.
