A CPD article showed Clare Rogers the importance of communication and teamwork in providing safe patient care.

Abstract

Teamwork is essential to provide safe and effective care in nursing. It requires co-operation, co-ordination and communication to achieve the right outcome.

The CPD article explained how effective teamwork promotes patient safety and high quality care, how behaviours can influence teamwork, the barriers to effective communication and tools that can help improve communication.

In multidisciplinary teams, information sharing regarding patient care requires teamwork and effective communication. Poor teamwork can result in mistakes, for example, when there is a breakdown in communication and team members address urgent information and situations differently. This may affect diagnosis, treatment and administration of medication and, therefore, patient safety.
