A CPD article enhanced hospice nurse Charlotte Dales understanding of communication in palliative care.

Abstract

This CPD article improved my knowledge of effective communication in breaking bad news, which is a frequent part of my new role in an adult hospice. Nurses have an important role in helping patients and families to prepare for, receive and assimilate bad news. It is essential that nurses are confident and competent to carry out this role.

Some healthcare professionals are reluctant to discuss emotive subjects for fear of causing distress. However, the majority of patients wish to receive honest, accurate and reliable information. Nurses are in an ideal position to support patients during the receipt of bad news and afterwards.
