Enquiry-based learning: what is it and how does it work?
Student-centred scenario-based sessions in small groups are providing deep learning that applies theory to practice throughout the course for Open University nursing students
Enquiry-based learning (EBL) is student-centred, practice-focused, highly developmental, collaborative and flexible, says lecturer in adult nursing Nicky Goodall, who specialises in integrating EBL into the Open University’s nursing curriculum.
In practice, a small group of students – ideally between eight and 12 – begin with a scenario. Working towards a goal, and with the guidance of a facilitator, they identify their own issues and questions, including the resources needed to aid their research and learning.
